New 2010-11 Season
Come celebrate our 10th season as the Georgia Philharmonic with our 2010-2011 Subscription Series!
Back by popular demand, John Morrison rejoins the Georgia Philharmonic as Interim Music Director.
We still play the great music our audiences have come to expect, but this year we are introducing a series of exciting new annual events.
The season starts with an evening of French Masters, featuring Georges Bizet's L'Arlesienne Suite No. 2 and other beloved works of the French Romantic and Impressionist periods. Join us for Maurice Ravel's hauntingly beautiful "Pavane for a Dead Princess", the moving lyricism of Faure's Suite from Pelleas et Melisande, and the rousing "Danse Bacchanale" from Samson et Dalila by Camille Saint-Saens. In January, watch the next generation of musicians battle for a their place in
musical history, with the first annual Georgia Philharmonic Young Artists Concerto Competition. In April, the
orchestra takes on the most famous Holst work, The Planets. You've heard it used for commercials and fireworks, now hear the
whole thing. Also in April, our first annual conducting apprentice program completes with a performance you won't want to miss.
We look forward to seeing you there.
As we prepare the new season, here are performances from our 2009-2010 season.
Classical Pops Summer Fling
September 13, 2009, 4 p.m.
Reardon Theatre
Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School
Join us for a wonderful blend of classical and pops music again this summer at the Rabun Music Festival,
nestled in the North Georgia mountains near North Carolina. This concert features something old and something
new, but absolutely nothing blue. On the first half, Dvorak's rousing New World Symphony and Mozart’s Overture
to “The Marriage of Figaro” will get your feet a-tapping. The second half includes the Strauss Emperor Waltz,
the Suppe Light Cavalry Overture, music from The Sound of Music, and three or four familiar surprises to get you dancing
in the aisles. Don’t miss this rare pops event! Information and tickets are available
at www.rabunmusicfestival.com
An Afternoon of Light Classics
October 10, 2009, 4 p.m.
Roswell Cultural Arts Center
Enjoy a Saturday afternoon out with the orchestra. On this fall day, we’ll feature a number of light classical
pieces that you are sure to recognize from musicals, movies, ballet, and more. Plus, we launch our 2009-2010 season
with guest conductor John Head, retired from the Atlanta Symphony as assistant conductor to Robert Shaw. The concert is perfect for young and old alike. Introduce the
kids to music you know, or remind your parents of their favorite ballet music. Share the music
with your entire family and invite those friends that think classical music is boring. Boring it won't be!
A European Tour
November 7, 2009, 7 p.m.
Blessed Trinity High School
We start the 2009-2010 season off with a bang! Belgian clarinet virtuoso
Roeland Hendrikx
joins the Georgia Philharmonic to perform the Mozart clarinet
concerto in A major, K. 622. Its soaring clarinet lines and lyrical phrasing
make it one Mozart’s most beautiful and well-known works. Also well known, but
less performed is Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations, a unique piece. Each variation
is dedicated to, and represents, one of Elgar’s friends (many are simply indicated
by initials). The variations continue with Brahms’ Variations on a Theme
by Haydn, Op. 56a. Opening the program is Brahms' Academic Festival Overture, a brilliant work which Brahms composed in appreciation of an honorary doctorate from the University of Breslau. John Morrison, of the Georgia Academy of Music and Atlanta Ballet orchestra, guest conducts.
An Evening of Bernstein and Gershwin
January 30, 2010, 7 p.m.
Roswell Cultural Arts Center
We've put together the perfect program to lift those mid-winter blahs! Master conductor, performer, and musical arranger
John H. Head takes the podium of the Georgia Philharmonic to bring you an evening of rousing favorites from Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin. Join us for themes from Bernstein's "West Side Story", followed by Gershwin's evocative "An American in Paris" and his unmistakable, unforgettable "Rhapsody in Blue". Also on the program are other classics of these two beloved American composers. It's a night guaranteed to send you home humming...
Music of the Modern Age
March 20, 2010, 7 p.m.
Roswell Cultural Arts Center
Join us for our exciting Premiere Night as we feature Music of the Modern Age! This spring marks the beginning of our new Premiere Program as we bring you the debut of an original classical work by modern Atlanta composer Dont'e Davis. We complement this fresh new piece with Sibelius' famed Finlandia and grandiose Symphony No. 2, plus Mussorgsky's inimitable Night on Bald Mountain. John Morrison, of the Georgia Academy of Music and Atlanta Ballet orchestra, returns as guest conductor.
Dvorak in his Prime
April 24, 2010, 7 p.m.
Conant Performing Arts Center, Oglethorpe University
As we approach the anniversary of Antonin Dvorak's death, we take a moment to look back on some of the masterworks he composed during his most celebrated time in Prague. During the period 1875 to 1892, Dvorak caught the attention of Johannes Brahms, whose friendship and patronage helped bring Dvorak's work to audiences throughout Europe. This exposure, and his resultant popularity, resulted in his appointment to the National Conservatory in New York and his beloved "New World" Symphony. Guest conductor Donald Horton leads the orchestra in a glorious selection of pieces from this transformative time in Dvorak's life, including his "Carnival" Overture and Symphony No. 8. This concert is co-sponsored by Oglethorpe University's Arts & Ideas at Oglethorpe series.
